Bridge and Gate

Vereduhr spans the river as a fortified bridge-gate, controlling the only reasonable entrance into the Underdeep from Eadria. Much of the city lies underground, while its visible presence above is built around the crossing and the gate.

Leverage

The city is shaped by deep stonecraft, toll-taking, guarded trade, and long familiarity with the Underdeep. Trade has made it a meeting place for daring Underdeeplings and gold-minded Eadrians.

The Lands of Aurnoore claim broad authority in the region, but Vereduhr was never conquered. Vereduhr reinforces the ambiguity of its position by insisting that it is technically part of the Underdeep, a claim that serves the city well in diplomacy.

The Lower Market

The lower market is an official, controlled quarter where Eadrians and Underdeeplings trade under Vereduhr’s oversight. It is not considered safe, and only the more daring among society tread there.

Vereduhr profits greatly from rare commodities moving between Eadria and the Underdeep. The city charges tolls and taxes as it sees fit.

Mutual Fear

Eadrians generally fear the Underdeep, while many Underdeeplings fear the open surface, which they call the Abyss.

Vereduhr presents itself as protector in both directions. Much of this is theater, but the theater itself helps preserve a tense peace.

Aurnoore

Vereduhr is respected and somewhat envied by Aurnoore, though political opinion among Aurnoorian leadership is divided and complex. The general populace of Aurnoore has little interest in the Underdeep.
